Hi All

I am going to make some potash...

I have acquired about a quarter of a bucket (2 gallon bucket) of finely sieved
wood ash...from a wood burning stove - oh yeah and I got
some nice lumps of charcoal from it too :) -
I have placed on the ash about 1 gallon of water and
I have been giving it a good stir every hour...
Tomorrow I intend to filter the ash out and then dry out
the filtered liquid.

Is this the correct procedure and how much potash can I expect?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated :D

Ghislain

P.S. there are all kinds of wood ash in it...is that ok?

My way to extract our salt is from Plants .

I use Rosemary herb but Oak its a traditional for this preparation. I have used 5 kg. of plants . Wash it with Hot water , clean from the earth and dust , and dry it in Sun Light . After the plant is absolutely dry you can burn it.
This operation must be done outside! ;)

Put your ashes in a cucurbit and give it a strong fire and calcine it until only white ash remains .Dissolute the ash in rainwater and filtrate it until it's white as snow.. Mix and shake weary good . For 5 kg plants I used 1 lit. water .
Left your ash solution "cool" for 6 hours then filtrate it with cotton filter, then evaporate your solution in a strong fire util it's absolutely dry.
Save your Potassium in Glass container protected from sun light.

I should point out that there is a big difference extracting the salt via fire and via putrefaction.

TP I am not trying to make a pure salt I just want to see if
I can make potash that I can use to extract water from alcohol...

Does that make sense? I am making the right stuff am I not?

At some later stage I may try to make a good salt like yours

Thanks

Sure, sure i get it!

The only thing is when your salt is not pure enough you will spoil the alcohol!
By the way keep your hand's from the water saturated with potash(lye).

Yes I see what you mean TP. But I have started so I will continue
for the moment. Here is my bucket (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/album.php?albumid=26&pictureid=98)
It shows a ladel full of the ash sediment.

Is there a way that I might purify the result of this further?

I will be starting a new thread on my spirit of wine. It is
this that I was going to use this potash on :(

Head's up you are on the right track. It will take only a couple of dissolving's and filtration's to purify it enough.
Here is another usefull method from Steve Kalec, thank's to Ab Roek for reminding me.

Here (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/album.php?albumid=26&pictureid=102) is the decanted liquid from the ash.

It looks very yellow...im guessing a lot of contaminants present.

Its quite caustic going by the litmus test and the slimy feel if
you get it on your fingers.

I have about 3 ltrs of this so it is going to take some time to evaporate
it off.

Will post a pick when I get the salt.

Here (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/album.php?albumid=26&pictureid=103) is the dried salt and here (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/album.php?albumid=26&pictureid=104) is the collected salt.

It is still very yellow. Should it be re-dissolved?
How will this dispose of the impurities?
Wont they just dissolve with the PC?

What about incinerating the impurities out?

I remember reading somewhere that if you get it too hot you get
potassium oxide...is this correct?

Finished drying...It precipitated 1/4 lb of salts

Now I have to find a way to clean it

Dissolve the collected salts again in distilled water, then pass the liquid through a coffee filter. Evaporate the water again and the salts will be cleaner.

I made a film about Potash & Spirit of Wine,
which will open when you click here (http://genius.toucansurf.com/SoW and potash.wmv)
I was not sure which post this belongs to so
I thought I would post it in both as it is only a link :)
