I have been growing this indoor plant (half hardy) for many years and my mother
before me.

If you crush the leaf it oozes a red liquid.

The plant trails and readily roots when in contact with soil.

However I have no idea what it is called.

Does anyone recognise this plant and know its name?

Here is a little story about this plant and why it means so much to me.

I call this my life plant...its health depicts how my life is going.

It started like this. When I was a student I had this plant on my window sill
in my room. As I was very busy with my studies I neglected the plant and it
would lose its leaves. Every now and then I would notice this scrawny almost
dead plant sitting there and pour a little water on it. It would soon perk up and
get a couple of extra leaves; only to be once again neglected and the original
leaves would brown and fall off.

There were times when this plant only had about two leaves and they would
be drooping. But it was a most forgiving plant and with a little water up it would
perk again. It was here that I noticed that it wasn't just the plant that was getting
neglected but many other aspects of my life.

I decided that I would pay extra special attention to my plant and it paid me back
with the most lush foliage you could imagine. I could not believe that this
beautiful plant was the same brown twig with a couple of drooping leaves that
used to sit on my window sill.

When ever I see my plant in a distressed state it makes me stop and take heed
of what is happening in my life.

It works...everyone should have a life plant :)

Try giving her some molasses and barley enzymes

My life plants love those sweet carbs and the enzymes help bacteria break down the dead roots.

Happy gardening! :D
