The middle way is not something one practices IMO.
It's something one arrives at after living a life of extremes.
Like Buddha - he was a pampered prince who became an ascetic who then
realised the middle way.
Another example that comes to mind is the author of "The Power of Now"
who only woke up after really wanting to kill himself - extreme.
Anyway, I've been finally noticing some extremes of my life start to balance
or swing less, and feeling alive and peaceful as a result.
I didn't make efforts to avoid or control these extremes - I indulged them. :D
