I arranged it so it is possible to place a donation. For now I have placed a donate button at the top left of the forums.

Any amount is appreciated from 1 dollar and upwards. Any money received through this PayPal account I've set up will go directly back into the forums. It will pay for things as fees and upgrades and technical support (if need be). No profits will be made from it, and I already got a job myself so I don't need the money - but I have always tried to make this a group effort...

I want this forum to be our forum, not my forum, and if members have the possibility to contribute ideas as well as resources it will enforce this concept. Without the members sharing their thoughts this forum is meaningless.

If you donate please send me a PM informing me of this and how much you donated so I can keep track of it, since it goes into my private account I need to be able to separate what is what!

Anyone who donates get the title Patron of the Sacred Art underneath their username (it is also possible to donate anonymously). See who has donated so far here (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/showthread.php?5153-The-Patrons-of-the-Sacred-Art).

Again it does not cost a lot to run this forum, but it does cost (around 250 dollars a year). The costs are mainly vBulletin, and this is the price to pay to be ad free I am afraid.

And you don't have to donate to be liked, I expect nothing, but I have been asked about this before so now you can donate if you want to. Perhaps there can be some perks as well if you donate? Like being able to store more PM's or something like that? Suggestions?

Update: if you donate you get 250 possible stored PM instead of the standard 50.

* if I notice from possible donations that we are reaching amounts needed I will let everyone know so we don't pay more than we need... but I guess left-overs can also go to next years fees!

I just donated $50 bucks so can I get a cool title by my name like Puffer? :p
I don't like Invenies Invenies
The name should reflect the amount of donation.... ROFL
Example: $2 dollars= contributor
$5 dollars=charitable giver
$20 dollars=Patron
$50 dollars= You're the shit, man
It should be like those themes on farmville,i.e. pot of gold, tuscan wedding, etc.. etc..

Nah, seriously extra PM space would be cool!!!

Awani

Thank you Leo!

We will figure out what the perks are in due time, and suggestions welcome!

I was just experimenting with Puffer to see what it would look like... but yes it does look a bit cooler;)

But I don't think the amount should matter. 1 dollar or 100 dollar = same perks

Otherwise money becomes part of some form of hierarchy... and I don't like that. Some can't give more than 1 dollar, some can give a lot... some probably don't even want anyone to know they donated? And some will never donate which is OK also!!!

Hope you all agree with me on this?

If anyone got a better title than Contributor please suggest it... it would be cool if it could have some alchemical twist to it!

Yeah like I said I was just kidding, all I care about is that everything I've taken the time to write which if you add up all the time I've invested in and it is priceless to me doesn't disappear in a flash, because of some asshole virus attacker or forgetting to pay the light bill. Honestly,.... when the site was down for a few days my heart just sunk, because it was all gone! And we didn't know what had happened to you. And I'm sure others felt the same way

I know you were joking... but I thought it best to point it out anyway.

I understand your horror, I felt the same. But even though I can't promise that this site will never go away (shit can happen, people die, computers can explode), I can promise that I will never close it down without giving it to someone else to care for if I for some reason can't do it anymore. And now with the donation system I am certain that economics won't ever be a problem either.

In a sense it was good that this malware shit happened... all experience is good and can only lead to improvements.

So the party will continue!

Thanks to all who have donated... and also thanks to all of you who donate your time and gnosis;)

In only a few days we have reached almost 75 % of the costs for the yearly fees... any donations received that goes over the amounts necessary will go to pay for next years fees (they always come in the fall).

Again thanks everyone!

* there are still a few things to sort out with the upgrade, but the important thing is that everything is running smoothly again (and if it doesn't please PM me).

Just received a ten dollar donation... it came perfect as the .com bills are coming this time of year, so thank you very much whomever it was as I can't find the e-mail or name amongst the registered members. If you know it was YOU then please PM me (if you want a contributor title in your profile), but it is also ok to remain anonymous if you want to.

Dev, I don't remember exactly how much it costs to have this place up (per year)... was it around 250$?

I have been personally contributing 25$ every year for the past three years.

I am FAR from being rich, yet 25$ (or even less) per year is really not too much of a burden for someone who enjoys this Forum and the learning/sharing experience it provides.

It's even less than I pay annually for my private email service (non-Google/Hotmail/Yahoo/etc...)

Of course, there is no mandatory requirement to contribute :)

You won't be less liked if you don't! LOL :D

Just posting here and sharing knowledge/experience is also a GREAT contribution, regardless if you donate or not!

Two days ago I clicked the Donate link, to make my (very modest) annual contribution to the maintenance of this board.

To my surprise, the PayPal landing page was in Swedish  (used to be in English)...

Anyway, just in case someone has come across this issue, I wanted to announce that it has been fixed, and the PayPal page is once again in English.

So, if you wish to support Alchemy Forums with even a small contribution, there is no language issue/barrier anymore, at least not for English speakers...

Also, I am reminding everyone that all Contributors (regardless of the donated amount) get 5 times the 'normal' PM storage capacity.
This means 250 stored Private Messages (instead of the regular 50), which is only logical, because you would be participating in server/storage costs.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone that has donated in 2014... I've just paid the fees for the year. If you have money over, 1 dollar or 10 dollars or 100 dollars... then send it our way (https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=jaAVWSfO7JUqfKCfMdb1Aw05dxTJfEUWcOkUWSlnhN bgJyK3Og0CDad5W0a&dispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f8e263663d3faee8d66f31424b 43e9a70645c907a6cbd8fb4).

This forum is non-profit and ad-free (which is the way we like it).

If you can donate please do. Any amount appreciated... and if you do donate you get the title Patron of the Sacred Art underneath your username (it is also possible to donate anonymously). You also get 250 possible stored PM instead of the standard 50. And a big Thank You!

Happy New Year!

* It costs about 250 dollar per year.

Amounts vary a little from year to year, but in the end it evens out to this:

URL/.com fee ($25)
forum hosting at special location with back-up ($100)
vbulletin license ($50)
tech services ($75).

Just received 10 bucks from a kind donor. Thank you.

I can't figure out who it is so please send a PM if you want Patron of the Sacred Art (gives you a bold username + more PM space).

Thanks again. Helps with keeping this site online. I personally don't make any profit. All donations cover the hostage costs etc.

THANKS TO ALCHEMY FORUMS

Dev, the administrators and members have contributed to this forum over many years to make this THE best alchemy forum on the web.

I studied and worked in the lab for over 20 years, all the time searching
for like minded souls but to no avail but then my prayers were answered and I found ALCHEMY FORUMS.

This forum covers so many topics and it's archive is a cornucopia of PRICELESS information.

It's a beacon of light to so many who find themselves lost in the labyrinth and hundreds if not thousands of guests search through this forum every week.

This treasure trove needs to be cared for.

We don't think much about spending some dollars on books or lab ware, but to
donate dollars to Alchemy Forums I believe is an investment in knowledge
and support.

Generously, Dev doesn't charge for membership and the forum is open for everyone to read for free.

I must say I was a little surprised to see only 22 names on the PATRON OF THE SACRED ART list, out of 457 members...and yes there are some anonymous ones too. Seeing this list has been a reminder that it has been a while since our last donation and prompted us to make it an annual ritual to pay our respects and show our gratitude. I would like to see the majority of members becoming patrons. Everyone can afford a small amount of change and if members donated every year it would make an enormous difference to the running costs of the forum providing support to those who support us!

Many thanks again Dev, the admin, and to the PATRONS OF THE SACRED ART!!!

Kind regards to all, Mr and Mrs Black

Many of the names on that list has donated more than one time (as you have). As for anonymous there is actually only two. ;)

THANKS TO ALCHEMY FORUMS

We don't think much about spending some dollars on books or lab ware, but to
donate dollars to Alchemy Forums I believe is an investment in knowledge
and support.

I whole heartedly agree. This forum is/has been invaluable for me already and I knew that for me, for the 2 months I've been a member, there was more than enough help that I received from the forum that it was worth the donation.

To all the members out there, it's not fun being the owner of a forum where you have to keep up-to-date with the latest forum updates, security patches, things that don't work, new vulnerabilities that require ongoing vigilance. Remember, dev is doing this out of the goodness of his heart and not for fame or glory (are you dev? )

A small donation from each of the members could help dev out maybe hire a bonafide forum admin that can make thread subscription work :p just sayin' or add more features or maybe more space for pics. Then maybe Andro could lose his reputation for being stingy with space :D If you guys will notice, even the emojis we get to use are limited... LOL

This is the one place we hang out where our minds and souls are aligned (IMHO) so in many ways this is not any different than if we were at a cafe, bar, restaurant, etc... where we wouldn't think twice to spend money on drinks or food so why not here to keep the forum going and get some better features and not let dev do most of the heavy lifting.

Awani
02-24-2017, 11:27 PM
It is greatly appreciated. Without the members posting there would not be any forum. :)

Not sure why the subscription does not work. Will have to test it.

In the past we did some updates that were a disaster and the forum had to be rebuilt and one month of posts were lost. vBulletin's newer patches are shit, and I don't dare to touch anything. LOL. Besides the updates look like Twitter or Facebook and more social media-styled... so I think it is best to leave things as they are.

As for images there are plenty of free image hosting sites. Use those and then add images with the link from those sites. See this (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/showthread.php?2933-Posting-Images-amp-Videos).

But it is true that I still have to pay license, + url fee and the tech people who do back-ups and host the forum on their servers. Regardless of the donations, seen overall since the forum began, it has always been an economic loss... although nothing spectacular. Just wanted to be very clear that I certainly don't make a profit. I could, but I think we all agree that it is nice to be somewhere without ads. :) So when I get a donation the gesture is always more important than the money. As it should be if the world was sane.

Finally what is most important for me is that EVERYONE feels they own this place together, and when you donate you kind of do. I see myself more of a guardian of this place and a cleaning lady, together with my co-cleaning ladies Andro and Mr. K.

There is a fair amount of cleaning to do at times that might not be noticeable... we act usually pretty fast when we see some dirt (double posts, typo, wrong section, trolls etc).

I have absolutely nothing to do with the allotted quantity & size of attachments.

It's a suburban myth, and I'm going to catch whoever started it and see to it that justice is swiftly served :)

But if I catch this person and then they choose to make a donation, it will count as a one-time-only 'get out of jail' card. LOL.

It's Friday night here and I was just having fun at Andro's expense :)

All truth be told, Andro's point on why he doesn't want images uploaded to the forum makes a lot of sense. Images can load up the server which then slows things down plus to your point, there are too many free sites so why not leverage them.

Back to the original thread, yes the more of us that donate and stay engaged, the better off we all will be in the long run IMO.
