Howdy:

Does anyone know the meaning and history of the VWIWV or .V.W.I.W.V. palindrome / acronym(?) as found on three of the four Michelspacher illustrations from Cabala, Spiegel der Kunst und Natur: in Alchymia??

I've found a website that has it as "As Within, So Without" but I'd like to know more, (ie. The latin; if that's what it is).

While we're at it, does anyone know where I can find an English translation of this document?

Thanks,
C

It is explained in an anonymous work ("The Water of the Wise") appended to von Frankenberg's Raphael oder Artztengel (http://books.google.com/books?id=-i9AAAAAcAAJ&pg=PA45).

"Unser Wasser ist Wasser Unser: ein himlisch Wasser/ ein Wasser des Lebens: ein Schlisch Wasser/ welchem alle Geister lieben."

"Our Water is Our Water: a heavenly water / a water of life: an [artificial, creeping, wiley, clever, tricky, sneaky, something like that] water / which all spirits love."

An English translation of 'Cabala: Spiegel der Kunst und Natur' can be found in The Hermetic Journal 20.

German Schlisch maybe = English 'Schlich' n. (Metal.) The finer portion of a crushed ore, as of gold, lead, or tin, separated by the water in certain wet processes?

Seems to make sense given the context.

schist is a candidate, IMO, if you follow this logic:
