Wow! I'm thinking, rootlets that are geotropic grow down through the cracks and the root lengthens along that pattern. But it is true that spirals are mathematically plotted, and must be an efficient manifestation of natural law from micro to macro.

In that first picture, I imagine the roots are following the water which collects in the cracks. A very apt visual representation of "going with the flow."
