So would the sun setting the star to combustion cause the associations(doom/violence) to become more or less pronounced? Will the sun intensify or dampen the effects of the star?

The sun's fiery nature will probably "burn" it in some way star's energy, it will probably do both : fueling it and burning some of its energies too.
