View Full Version : AF Policy Reminders & Updates

Since we're all diverse/different individuals, there's no way to please everyone.

For example:

During the developments on the Aspects of Alchemy (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/showthread.php?3946-Aspects-of-Alchemy&p=34131#post34131) thread, we've seen how discussions can easily spiral into personal attacks, sarcasm, off-topic/TMI, context-less/unsubstantiated one-liners and what not. During those 'heated exchanges' I've received quite a few PMs, from different 'sides' of the 'conflicts', each telling a different story and suggesting/implying different things.

A few say the forums are getting too 'materialistic' for them, so they don't feel like logging in anymore.

Others say that whoever attacks someone personally (and in full awareness of it) should be censored (as in deleting the offending posts) and even banned, and that if all they keep seeing on the forums is threads filled with insults and non-related info and trivia, THEY won't feel like logging in anymore...

Others yet say (or imply) that those attacks can be an 'alchemical rectification' process of sorts, and would complain if anything is 'censored'/deleted, etc, etc...

Now, to clarify a few things:

Regardless of the above mentioned opinions/perspectives, the Rules & Guidelines (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/announcement.php?f=5&a=3) clearly state that personal attacks are not allowed and can be grounds for instant banning.

Same/similar for repeatedly/persistently straying off-topic with personal chat-room style exchanges, whether offensive or friendly: This is not anyone's private chat-room, and such behavior, if it persists, is also known as 'thread hijacking' (also against Rules & Guidelines (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/announcement.php?f=5&a=3)).

Some people also seem to be under the (false) impression that AF is an entity with some vested interest in keeping people from leaving (like a cult or any comparable entity that stands to gain from maintaining a large membership). Those who think so, couldn't be more wrong.

So, strictly in line with the Rules & Guidelines (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/announcement.php?f=5&a=3) (and not because of anyone's particular opinion), from now on there will be zero tolerance for directly attacking/insulting another forum member or a group of members (no more group-insult loopholes!).

Anyone who resorts to personal (or group) insults/attacks towards other members, will be banned instantly.

Same zero tolerance for thread hijacking and trolling. And no, someone who repeatedly/persistently disagrees with someone else's points (while backing up their counter-points without resorting to logical fallacies and personal insults/attacks), is NOT 'trolling'. If you don't know the (Internet) meaning of 'trolling', please look it up.

Any long/repeated/persistent off-topic posting that derails threads & topics, will be either moved to spin-off threads or deleted.

Whoever enjoys the forums and chooses to stay, will have to understand and behave according to the 'Rules of the House'. This is not a public service and we are all guests here.

Moderators come and go.

Forum Members come and go.

Many have left, many new ones have joined.

The Cosmic Pendulum keeps swinging to and fro.

This Forum's Rules & Guidelines (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/announcement.php?f=5&a=3) are not designed to keep people in or to force them out.

They are designed to maintain a platform of diversity, meaningful & coherent exchanges and mutual respect/allowance/netiquette/common courtesy.

A Forum is as 'good' or 'bad' as its members. The ground rules are only intended to maintain certain standards of behavior and the original 'Platform of Concept'. What you do with it, is up to you.

If anyone doesn't like it, they have the complete freedom to leave.

Also, from now on, I will ignore any PMs suggesting that 'people may leave the forums if yes or not this and that'. I'm suggesting the same to all present and future moderators.

So please take note.

Comments are disabled (this thread is locked), as this is not an invitation to further discussion/debate, but only for periodical 'policy' updates.

A quick reminder:

The Rules & Guidelines (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/announcement.php?f=5&a=3) of this forum are there for a reason. They have allowed this place to stay alive, open and hopefully relevant for over a decade, to be easily searchable and readable, relatively uncluttered by countless off-topic posts, hijacked threads, chatroom-style exchanges, etc...

So, if an administrative intervention is made, whatever the nature of it, do not take it personally. When I first joined, more than 8 years ago, I used to get upset when some of my posts were moved or even sometimes deleted (off-topic comments, some mild trolling, a few silly flame wars I got into, etc...). Looking back, I support every decision made by the mods/teams before me, being now able to see a larger picture than my own projections.

Administrative decisions/interventions are not to be brought up and/or discussed on the public forum.

If someone got a case of butthurt, they can PM Awani (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/member.php?1-Awani), who is the founder and Admin of this forum.

This forum is not a public service and we are all guests here.

Cheers :)
