This is the result of Glauber's secret salt in sulfuric, along with copper nitrate and silver chloride.

AgCl was turned into a black, tar like substance. It is liquid in the sulfuric bath, but the moment it is removed it solidifies like a rock. Put it back in, it's liquid again.

When you torch the black tar ball, it turns to something resembling Au. The substance does not dissolve in either nitric or hydrochloric.

If you torch too long, the copper can actually be seen to burn off in the form of a green flame, at which point it reverts to a nugget of metallic silver.

In AR it degrades back into what seems to be AgCl.

I suppose if you do it right, it all converts to sol, as I have seen personally.

Thanks for presenting this crestind.

Could you please document the process you did? ...In order to save many readers (and me) the
trouble of looking up how to make glaubers secret salt.

Thanks again

Glauber's "secret sal ammoniack" is just ammonia sulfate. He says he makes it by mixing "spirit of urine" (a liquid consisting of ammonia hydroxide, water, ammonia carbonate and other volatile organics) with vitriol (sulfuric acid). You can learn more about it in SPAGPHARM7.pdf, page 11/33. It's not really a secret. It's just a name.

I didn't make it. I just bought it. It's more pure and it also does the job. You can make it by neutralizing common ammonia salts - carbonate, chloride, hydroxide with sulfuric.
