This is a Phoenix-thread (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/showthread.php?t=7) from the old site (http://alchemy-forums.forumotion.com/forum.htm).

A male pine cone is known as microstrobilus and a female as megastrobilus, kind of like micro and macrocosm!

The pine cone is a symbol of immortality and the divine in earth-based religions and the Oreiades (gnomes/nymphs, beings who discovered iron (blood/saturn) and invented smelting. The Oreiades are often seen as carrying a snake and a large staff with a pine cone on top.

"E. A. Wallis Budge has noted that in some of the papyri illustrating the entrance of the souls of the dead into the judgment hall of Osiris the deceased person has a pine cone attached to the crown of his head. The Greek mystics also carried a symbolic staff, the upper end being in the form of a pine cone, which was called the thyrsus of Bacchus. In the human brain there is a tiny gland called the pineal body, which is the sacred eye of the ancients, and corresponds to the third eye of the Cyclops. " Manly P. Hall
The Vatican:

Staff of Hermes:

And the Pine Cone pic from the Lisbon Globe (http://forum.alchemyforums.com/showthread.php?t=87) thread:

For the Assyrians the pine-cone may have symbolized the whole process of re-birth with seeds falling to the earth and creating new pine trees. Like the Phoenix out of the ashes!

Then there is the Lotus with a 1000 petals (Sahasrara) to consider as well!

What are those BIRDS doing there right beside the large pine cone at the Vatican?

I believe they're peacocks, how interesting.

However, the Lotus with a 1000 petals (Sahasrara) is something else (I mean, probably more related to the brain, not really the pineal gland).

Often referred as thousand-petaled lotus, it is said to be the most subtle chakra in the system, relating to pure consciousness, and it is from this chakra that all the other chakras emanate. When a yogi is able to raise his or her kundalini, energy of consciousness, up to this point, the state of Samādhi, or union with God, is experienced. It is often related to the pineal gland and the violet color. - source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahasrara)

All in the brain is related to the pineal gland, or so I would hope:)

Are those by a monument of some sort? A church maybe? Can't tell what's to the right of the image.

Although I don't know what it is, but looks to be some royal monument or war monument of some sort (or possibly religious)... most monuments in Europe are royal by default. Don't know the name of it so hard to google... it lies on one of the main shopping streets in Vienna. It was over 18 months ago since I was there... forgot I had the picture at all.
