    The solid substance aka, Read Lead, Antimony, Sericon, Adrop, is the Calx as well after the initial putrefaction of the Green Lyon. You cannot get both from one putrefaction of the Green Lyon. So you have to follow one of his accurtations which says to take the Green Lyon without vinegar and distill it to receive the Philosophical Mercury, Sulfur and Calx (after calcination). Then the Vinegar is prepared and a new volume of the Green Lyon is dissolved into the Philosophical Vinegar. From that one gets the gum Adrop or Sericon.
    The "Accurtations" does indeed reveal (by logical implications, not by direct statements) that the "Green Lion" can be prepared without dissolution in vinegar (whether acetic acid or some other acid menstruum is meant by this name; in the "Marrow of Alchemy" he clearly refers to other acid solvents that can also be used in some of the preparations, so Ripley used in fact several acids in his various manners of operating.) Notice, therefore, that it is neither wood nor soot, as you think, since these matters do not dissolve in such acid liquors (at least certainly not in vinegar) and do not form any "green gum", which "gum" will then be destructively distilled into the several substances he describes in many of his works. The "Green Lion" here is a composite material itself already, even without dissolution in a separate acid menstruum. But Ripley does not explain anything about its composition in that text. For that you need to look into "Liber Secretisimus", the only one of his works where he gives some info regarding this crucial subject.

    "Most Sharp Vinegar" or "Secret Water" is one of the distillation products of the "Green Lion", "Adrop", "Sericon", etc., which is not the same as the "vinegar" or the "aqua vitae" he uses before, during some of the possible preparations of this "matter". But as the "Accurtations" implies, it is not absolutely necessary to carry out this dissolution in vinegar.

    I think the quotes from Ripley I provided do confirm what you say. First you dry distill the Green Lyon to get the Most Sharp Vinegar. As indicated in the quotes and what I said above in the thread the names change after certain preparations.

    No it is not necessary to carry out the dissolution of the initial Green Lyon in his Most Sharp Vinegar. Ripley gives more than 14 ways of operating with the same Elements obtained from the initial Green Lyon.

    Hollandus gives a similar procedure in his Vegetable Opera where he says to rub the herb into a fine paste with burnt wine, distill and repeat until it is even better than the Stone. You cannot rub the herb with burnt wine until you distill the herb to get the burnt wine in the first place. Then you put the burnt wine onto new herb.

    But the "Most Sharp Vinegar" or "Secret Water" is not the same substance. The "vinegar" (whatever acid solvent Ripley meant by this; for example, in the "Marrow of Alchemy", he says that the acid distilled from common vitriol, a.k.a. "the green lion of fools", can be used in such preparatory operations to "elixirate" the "Green Lion", so by "vinegar" Ripley can easily mean several acid solvents) is optional. The "Sharp Vinegar" or "Secret Water" is not. It is one of the products of distilling this "Green Lion" either previously dissolved in "vinegar" or not.
