    Austin Osman Spare

Always loved this man... here's a short documentary about the guy...

    Fuck A.C.

    A.O.S eats him for lunch!

    His works: http://hermetic.com/spare/

    Some quotes...

And remember, you shall suffer all things and again suffer: until you have sufficient sufferance to accept all things.
    Art can contradict Science.
Know all ritual, ceremony, conditions, as arbitrary (you have yourself to please), a hindrance and confusion; their origin was for amusement, later for the purpose of deceiving other from knowing the truth and inducing ignorance; and as always happens their high priests were the more deceived themselves. He who deceives another deceives himself much more. Therefore know the Charlatans by their love of rich robes, ceremony, ritual, magical retirements, absurd conditions, and other stupidity, too numerous to relate. Their entire doctrine a boastful display, a cowardice hungering for notoriety; their standard everything unnecessary, their certain failure assured. Hence it is that those with some natural ability quickly lose it by their teaching. They can only dogmatise, implant and multiply that which is entirely superficial. Were I a teacher I should not act as master, as knowing more, the pupil could lay no claim to discipleship. Assimilating slowly, he would not be conscious of his learning, he would not repeat the vital mistake; without fear he would accomplish with ease. The only teaching possible is to show a man how to learn from his own wisdom, and to utilise his ignorance and mistakes. Not by obscuring his vision and intention by righteousness. - from the great The Book of Pleasure

Donít let the delusion of reality confuse you regarding the reality of the illusion.

A Wizard once spoke ritual in which the spirit of Crowley became a disappointing deceit, in which the words of the man were a reflection of his folly, his end, the result of his being- to die insane and maddened as a diseased, crippled shadow. A man who would be flaunted and exalted for No Purpose by people who ate his cream on a whim, who were for the most part lacking in the true meaning of the word occult, who despite following his dogma, his cult, his propaganda, his ghost, have neither amounted to the power of this man nor ever display the intelligence he was in his prime.

Aleister Crowley appeared in dreams. His advice was never sane, nor was it ever wise, and he constantly came in as the guise of a luciferic deceiver who truly did deceive rather than invoke Truth. He didn't have the lighted presence of agrippa, he didn't hold a light in himself and in fact in dreams appeared to be a very muddy grey, a fog, a mist with no corporeal form or effect. And in so, his deceit is revealed in that dreamy place of Yesod.

The followers of Crowley flaunt, and exalt, this fiend who was not a devil but a fiend for heroine, for opium, for the indulgences he, despite all his Greatness, couldn't retreat from.

These are what brought me to the insight:

"And remember, you shall suffer all things and again suffer: until you have sufficient sufferance to accept all things."
    "Art can contradict Science."
"Know all ritual, ceremony, conditions, as arbitrary (you have yourself to please), a hindrance and confusion; their origin was for amusement, later for the purpose of deceiving other from knowing the truth and inducing ignorance; and as always happens their high priests were the more deceived themselves. Because I see him not in the illusions of my dreams, but within myself:

    Herein is the key:

The picture was taken years ago, long before any reading of any specific occult figure.
I don't want to make a claim to reincarnation. That would be much too Crowleyan-Follower.

If I was reincarnated from the man, obviously I accepted reincarnation. I don't have to suffer it anymore.

    Yes!!! I love AOS!
I've written some essays about him, some of them got published, but always in Spanish.

It is amazing how he developed the whole Surrealist theory and practice in 1913, when his published his Book of Pleasure. By 1916 he wrote another article titled "Automatic Drawing".... which mostly explained exactly the same things that Andre Breton wrote in 1924 in his "First Surrealist Manifesto".

As for his relationship with Crowley... they were friends for 2 years when Spare was young... and then Spare started to think that Crowley was a mediocre clown... and did the only thing that Crowley was unable to forgive: laughing at him. And that was the end of their relationship.
There's a letter from AOS to K. Grant in which he tells Grant about the last time he saw Crowley in his life. They were at a restaurant with a group of friends, all of them were talking and Crowley was feeling very uneasy because the conversation was not about Crowley's favorite subject, which was himself. So Crowley tried several times to make the conversation a bit more focused on himself... and when such thing became impossible, Crowley decided to throw his own food all over his own face and clothes... and wanted to talk to the other people eating there about how free he was, how he didn't care at all about the social conventions and morals and so on... But Spare saw Crowley all covered in food and trying to become the center of attention and couldn't stop laughing at him and thinking that he was a douchebag. They never talked or saw each other again.

Something similar happened to Israel Regardie with Crowley. Regardie received a letter by Crowley with a lot of nonsense.... so he replied the letter calling him "Edwarda" (Crowley's real name was "Edward", not "Aleister"). That was also the end of the relationship between Regardie and Crowley.

Crowley... he obviously was such a megalomaniac that he couldn't stand the idea that someone could laugh at him.

It is, however, interesting, that Crowley and Spare gave the same man, Kenneth Grant, the legal right to go on with their works (Spare gave him the copyright of his books, both published and unpublished... besides from almost all his paintings and drawings that didn't got sold, which were many. Crowley gave him the right to go on with the O.T.O.... though such thins was disputed by several other individuals).

As for Spare himself... I love his ideas, but I like even more his art (it is weird that in most of the modern books about AOS, the fact that he was an Artist doesn't seem to matter much... And he was, mainly, an Artist).
AS for his books... I love them too. He was a hardocre Platonist, mostly following ideas by Plotinus... and what his book provide is, in my opinion, one of the most interesting points of view about neo-platonism (Spare's "Kia" in nothing else than Plotinus' "One").

A short movie I filmed in 2003 and was released by Fulgur Limited in 2004, celebrating the 100 years of "Earth: Inferno" (the first book AOS published).

Oh.... maybe I should write the "Not Safe for Work" notice... or your working partners may end up thinking that you are into some really weird type of porn. :P
