Finally found it on YouTube, of all places...
The Mysterious Stranger (1982), based on Mark Twain's unfinished work.
Besides the fraudulent medieval alchemist and some funny German accents, if you watch until the end, there are some cool exchanges pertaining to Liberation.
I have no doubt Mark Twain was an accomplished Lucid Dreamer!
