One could argue that to some the stone, or it's symbol in one's mind seems to be like a very suitable and nourishing surface for one's very own projections, which indeed can have similarities of what others may project on or in it.
From a certain perspective, the Philosopher's Stone stands for an attainment that heals and transcends those things humans are typically suffering from, both externally and internally.
Some non-alchemists for example project their personal yearnings on the grail, or a new love affair, which can basically be the same process and doesn't necessarily has much to do with the stone at first sight.
