    testamentum of raimondo lullo

I've been informed that this is widely available in latin,

    Well, here:

"has been printed in several languages, French, English, Italian, it is Llull's most extensive work on alchemy, the codicil is a synthesis, it is not easy to find in modern language, in Latin it's clearly available"

So I'm wondering if anyone knows where it could be found in Italian, English, or French.. in that order of priority.

    Asking for a friend.

Here's a crude translation of the Elucidation of the Testament (not the actual Testament):

The Elucidation, or clarification of Ramon Llull's testament ( Bibliotheque des philosophes chimiques , Paris, 1740-1754, vol. IV.)

From Italian Translation by Massimo Marra

Although we have composed several books on the different operations of our philosophical art, this little treatise, which is our last, is nevertheless the one we prefer to all the others, so that it deserves to be called by us The Elucidation of our Testament. Especially since what we have really hidden in our Testament and in our Codicillus through long dissertations regarding the writings of the Philosophers, we clarify here very clearly and in very few words. But so that I do not need to compose other books, since composition is nothing else, and consists of nothing but the subtlety of a beautiful spirit in well covering and concealing our Art, what we have abundantly demonstrated in our books comes out now from the darkness and is led to a pleasant light, all the more so as none of the Philosophers has ever dared this enterprise.

Therefore we divide this book into six chapters, in which the whole mystery of this Art is clarified through very clear words, of which chapters:

The first deals with the matter of the Stone,
The second deals with the Vase
    The third with the Stove
    The fourth with the Fire
    The fifth with the Decoction
And the seventh with the Tincture and the multiplication of the Stone.

    CHAPTER I.

Of the matter of the stone

So let's begin first of all to make known the matter of our Stone. Although we have applied things extraneous to our Magisterium by virtue of their similarities, nevertheless our Stone is composed of a single thing, triune in relation to its effectiveness and its principle, to which we do not add anything extraneous, nor do we diminish it. We have described three Stones, namely the mineral, the animal and the vegetable, although there is only one stone in our Art. We wish, O children of the doctrine, to indicate that this compound contains three things, namely soul, spirit and body. It is called ore, as it is a mine; animal, because it has a soul; vegetable, because it grows and is multiplied. In which the whole mystery of our Magisterium is hidden, which is the Sun, the Moon and the Water of Life; and this water of life is the soul and the life of the bodies, through which our stone is vivified. For this reason we call it Heaven, incombustible quintessence and with other infinite names, since it is almost incorruptible as Heaven is in the continuous circulation of its movement. Thus, through this clear demonstration, you have the matter of our Stone in all its greatness.

    CHAPTER II

    Of the vase

We have now decided to talk about our Vase; O you, children of the doctrine, pay close attention, so that you may understand our sentiment and our spirit. Although we have shown you several kinds of vessels which are enigmatically described in our books, we are nevertheless not of the opinion that we are using several vessels, but only of one, which we will show here through sensitive and visible demonstrations. In this Vase our work is completed from the beginning to the end of the whole Magisterium.

Our Vase is composed as follows: there are two vases connected to their stills, of equal size, quantity and form at the top, where the nose of one enters the belly of the other, so that by the action of heat, what is in both sides rises into the head of the vessel, and through the cold action then descends in the belly.

O children of the doctrine, if you are not a hard-brained people, you have the knowledge of our vessel.

    CHAPTER III

    Of The Cooker

We will now speak of our stove, but it will be very difficult for us to explain here the secret of our oven, which the ancient Philosophers have hidden so well. We have drawn several Cookers in our books, nevertheless I sincerely declare to you that we use only one Cooker, which is called Athanor, whose meaning is that of being an immortal fire, since it always gives fire equally and to the same degree, vivifying and nourishing our compound from the beginning until the completion of our Stone. O children of the doctrine, listen to our words and understand: our oven is made up of two parts, it must be well sealed in all the joints of its casing. And this is how the nature of this Cooker is: whether the Cooker is made large or small, according to whether the large quantity of matter requires a large Cooker, or the small quantity a small Cooker; it must be built in the manner of a still-cooking stove with its lid, which is tightly closed and sealed. In this way, when the stove has been built with its lid, make sure that there is a crack on the bottom, so that the warmth of the lit fire can breathe in it; this nature of fire requires and demands only this oven, and not others. The closing of the joints of our Cooker is called the seal of Hermes, since it is known only by the Sages, and is nowhere explicitly stated by any of the Philosophers, since it is protected in Wisdom, which watches over it with common power.

    CHAPTER IV

    Of fire

Although in our books we have dealt perfectly with three types of fire, namely the natural, the connatural and the counter-nature, and with several other modalities of our fire, nevertheless we want by this to mean a fire composed of different things, and it is a secret very great is to come to the knowledge of this fire, because it is not human, but angelic. This celestial gift must be revealed to you, but for fear that the curse and the execration of the Philosophers, which they left to their successors, will not be thrown upon us, we pray to God that the treasure of our secret Fire cannot pass through and reach us. hands of the Sages, and not of others.

O Sons of Wisdom, lend ear to understand and understand our composite Fire, which will be of two things: know that the Creator of all things has created, among others, two things suitable for this fire, that is, horse fimo and the quicklime, the composition of which causes our Fire, the nature of which is the following: take from the belly of the Horse - that is to say the well digested horse manure - one part, of the pure quicklime, another part. Having composed these things, kneaded together and placed in our stove, and having placed our vessel containing the matter of our Stone, and having closed the oven well on each side, you will then have the divine fire without light and without coal, placed in its Cooker; and it could not be otherwise, having everything he needs.

But this manure and this lime are divine, and they mean our matter which has its internal and Divine fire: because our artificial fire is the weak heat produced by the fire of a lamp.

    CHAPTER V

    Of the Decoction

There are also different ways of preparing our Stone in our Testament, which are clarified in our other treatises: that is the solution, the coagulation, the sublimation, the distillation, the calcination, the separation, the fusion, the waxing, the imbibition and fixation etc .. The significance of all these operations is only the decoction. Nevertheless, in our decoction alone, all these ways of operating are accomplished, but the nature of our decoction is to put the matter of the compound according to measure, in its jar, in its oven and on its fire, to cook continuously. In this, according to the Philosophers, our whole work consists. Through this linear cooking, sweet and greasy at the beginning, the material reaches its perfect maturity; which will take place in ten philosophical months, from the beginning to the end of the whole Magisterium, without any manual work. Through these ways and these operations, we want to introduce you to the excellence and sublimity of our art, and how the spirit of the Sages has wrapped it in a dark veil, for the fear that he who is unworthy of this Art will not reach at the top of the mountain of our secret; but that he rather persists in his error, until the Sun and the Moon are assembled into a globe, which will be impossible for him to do except by the will of God.

    CHAPTER VI

Of the Tincture and the multiplication of our Stone

Finally, we will speak of Tincture and multiplication, which is the end and the fulfillment of the whole Magisterium. We have shown in our other books various types and manners of the projection of our Tincture; however, since our dyeing is no different from multiplication, and since neither can be accomplished without the other, for this our stone must first be dyed, and when dyed, its quantity is multiplied. Thus it is dyed by means of our multiplied stone white or red. O children of wisdom, reject the darkness and darkness of your spirit to understand the secret of secrets hidden in our books with admirable industry, which secret now comes out of an abyss and appears in the light of day. Hear and understand, since our multiplication is nothing other than the reiteration of the compound of our compound primordial Work; because in the first reiteration a part of our Stone dyes three parts of an imperfect body, and in as many parts it multiplies and grows in quantity; in the second iteration one part dyes seven; in the third a part dyes fifteen; in the fourth iteration one part dyes thirty-one; in the fifth iteration one part tinges sixty-three; in the sixth iteration one part tinges one hundred and twenty-seven, and it is always multiplied and increased in as many parts, thus proceeding to infinity.

Behold, O children of doctrine, how our writings which had been hidden up to now under parables are discovered, and we illuminate them against the precepts of the Philosophers, but we want to excuse ourselves for their reprimands and their reproaches, for fear of fall with divine permission in their execration and curses; for this we place the words of this treatise under the custody of Almighty God, who gives every knowledge and every perfect gift to whomever he wants, and takes away from whomever he likes, so that they may be remitted to the power of his divinity, and also so that he do not allow them to be found by the wicked and the wicked. O children of the doctrine, give thanks to God immediately because with his divine illumination, he closes and opens the human intellect. And may the holy Name of God be blessed forever and ever.

    So be it.

Thanks Michael. It's a shame that the U.K. is so "counter" to the general european paradigm, as it relates to the digitization and dissemination of this material. It's too bad we don't have someone in the U.K. maybe we could ask Maclean. (hhahah oh god, I'm just joking).

If it was something I was that interested in, I'd buy the french copy, scan it and ocr it, and start trying to translate.

I bought the "Die Erleuchteten" that florius mentioned several times to do just that. Although I haven't yet.

Sure Vigilance, as for the language aspect, i'd rather start by searching digitalized versions of english/american authors. (concerning english books)

English authors, english groups of the past etc... like philaletes ripley daustin vaughan and backstrom (the american adept as they call him) for example.. i have plenty of their books in english.

Check also the A. E. Wait collection.
