Study Materials for Topics of Interest Related to Alchemy.

Hi all,

If one was interested in studying complementary subjects to alchemy such as astronomy, chemistry, physics, geology as well as certain types of literature such as shake spear oh and of course mathematics with its subsets where would they begin?

I know that I can punch any of these into the wonder bar and get a bunch of results however I am looking for personal recommendations of study material that you or someone you know has garnered a good experience from.

I am looking for firstly "elementary" level learning on these topics before advanced, and preferably textbooks that have a graded progression from basic to advanced building precept upon precept. I like the idea of printed texts as I can safeguard them at our place for my and my children's future learning.

I did take an astronomy course in university and have some Basic knowledge of physics , more so than chemistry but probably not even at a diligent high school level of knowledge.

Just looking for recommendations of what to read.

I think that Astronomy/astrology, Geometry and mathematics would be key.
If all I get is crickets I will assume that I will have to research such at appropriate places dedicated to each individual subject. i.e. I am sure there is lots of good learning advice for astronomy on an astronomy forum or website.

Alright, I signed up for a free course on physics from the university of Virginia. obviously low level but If i get this course done I can move on to more advanced concepts. I found this cool website offering a bunch of free courses from various universities. I generally tend to direct research things for my self but when you do not know where to even start with a given topic I feel it can be helpful to get started under some structured education. I will report back my experience whenever I finish this physics course (its self paced).

There is also the chance some courses may be a blow out and not adequate for learning anything new as I feel a lot of these are geared for the relatively less educated portions of the population but it is nice to see that there are free materials structured and organized for us to utilize on a variety of topics, what a gift this internet can be.

One of the best books I’ve read which has opened my eyes is ”The Secret Teachings of Plants: The Intelligence of the Heart in the Direct Perception of Nature“ by Stephen Harrod Buhner.

Buhner is a professional herbalist, and I’ve always thought herbalism to be related to alchemy.

The alchemical saying is, let nature be our guide. This books gives an incredible explanation of how to go about communicating with the natural world.

The title sounds very good! We are in the proccess of moving off grid and our neighboor is big into plant intelligence and communication so this might give us something to talk about.

Hey, Kiorionis, this neighbour of mine has the other book of his "plant intelligence and the imaginal realm" I remember us discussing it over the summer.
Thanks again! In truth, I am looking to order a fair amount of paper books as I want to have a real book shelf in our cabin to do deep reading during the winter months. I already have a small collection going but am looking to add to it. I know most things are easier to get and cheaper in digital format but I like the idea of having it in a book from the perspective of simplicity.

All alchemist were deeply religious so study the Bible and traditions of the church. The acts of the Council of Trent especially on the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church is a must read for every alchemists. You will discover the same symbols, terms and opus operandi as in alchemy.

Thank you for the suggestions True Initiate! I also am deeply influenced by the Bible so no surprises there. It is amazing how interwoven alchemy is into many different materials that we can pick up on once our vision has acclimated.

I am curious as to why you recommend "The acts of the Council of Trent especially on the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church" if you have a moment to give me a briefing? If not no worries I can go study this too and I am sure I will see the importance.

Something that I am struggling with is the practical applications of say astronomy. I would like the things that I am learning to be applicable in life. I for example want to learn more about the zodiac as it relates to time and ages. I get a little confused with how to use astronomy as a tool to decipher time. I know it can be used for this. (Like if I did not know what date it was, it would be useful to be able to glean information from the stars in relation to the current time frame. ) I know that there is a north star or pole star that changes as the ages change so although the stars appear fixed in actuality they are not.. I know that as we orbit the sun our view of the stars changes depending on which direction the earth is facing at that season of the year which makes certain constellations come and go. But then the ecliptic plane of earth is offset from the celestial plane of our sun (i think) and is the celestial plane in line with the galactic plane? Then add in the "wobble" and it all gets a bit confusing when you try to translate it to you standing in your backyard looking up.

So yeah I guess I am looking for more physical, practical based science help to augment my spiritual/experiential discoveries and put some of it in context. Can't hurt to develop the other side of thought.
